Chapter Six

Joe’s eyes widened as he realized that he was about to get shot at by the man in the flat cap.

“Look out!” Joe cried to Sam, but she hadn’t seen their assailant. She didn’t have time to react.

The shot from the gun shattered the windscreen of the car. Joe was quick enough to dive down, grabbing Sam and pulling her out of the way too. His ears were ringing and his heart squeezed painfully at his chest. He blinked several times, trying to keep himself grounded in the moment.

What the hell was going on?

“We need to get out of here!” Joe cried. “Before they shoot again!”

Sam’s eyes were panicked, but she nodded, unclipping her seatbelt and opening the driver’s door. Joe heard another shot as he tried to get out of the other side, a metallic clink letting him know that the bullet had buried in Sam’s car door. Joe rushed around the back of the vehicle to come to her aid, searching his surroundings for somewhere to run to.

“Get the hell away from my property, you fucking freeloaders!” the man shouted as he began to reload the rifle. Joe darted forward, grabbed Sam’s wrist and pulled her into a run, the pair of them stumbling over one another as they ran hard into the trees that backed up the row of expensive houses.

The echo of another shot made Joe dive to the forest floor, pulling Sam down in a heap beside him. He could feel her trembling as they waited another moment before getting to their feet again, running as fast as they could away from the man and his gun.

By the time Joe’s lungs burned too hard for him to continue, they hadn’t heard a shot in over five minutes. Joe collapsed to his knees and Sam bent double, trying to catch her breath. It only began to dawn on Joe then how screwed they were. He had no weapons with him, no food, no map, and no means of going back to the car if they wanted to walk away with their lives. In a matter of minutes, their chances of survival had been shot.

“What the hell was his problem?” Sam wheezed.

“Sick, rich fucker assuming everyone is out for what belongs to him, probably. He came prepared with those road spikes…how does anyone even get hold of those?”

“Does it matter? He’s fucked us,” Sam said. “We’ve got nothing.”

Joe slowly rose to his feet, his knees shaking. He knew they couldn’t be too far away from the farm - they’d only driven for about half an hour - but he was disoriented enough to know he’d struggle to navigate his way back there, and it was a lot further on foot. Not to mention the fact that they were unprepared and exposed. It was a stark reminder of why he usually chose to stay at the farm. He wasn’t made for this, and now he was stuck. He tried desperately to catch his breath, to calm his racing mind, but the more he tried, the more he panicked.
